Join us for walking tours with the horticulture staff at each of our three locations during the Nebraska Nursery and Landscape (NNLA) Field Day on Thursday, September 19. The event will include presentations and tours of each property.

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo
Isaac Fuenning, Director of Horticulture, will lead attendees on a guided tour of the zoo, highlighting plants of interest.

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is a 10-acre zoo located in the heart of Lincoln, NE. The Zoo, which opened to the public in the summer of 1965 and is now home to more than 400 animals, also features around 300 species of plants and trees, approximately a third of which are native to the Great Plains region. The Zoo is a Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Landscape Steward Affiliate Site.

Sunken Gardens, Rotary Strolling Garden, Hamann Rose Garden & Cascade Fountain:
Zach Halley, Public Gardens District Supervisor for Lincoln Parks & Recreation, along with his staff, will provide tours of the Sunken Gardens, Rotary Strolling Garden, Hamann Rose Garden and Cascade Fountain.

Conveniently located next to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, attendees will learn about the history of these unique gardens as well as the design, implementation and maintenance of the gardens. This year’s theme of the Sunken Gardens is “Golden Hours.” Formerly a neighborhood dumpsite, this 1.5 acres was first developed in 1930, and has been transformed into an iconic feature of Lincoln.

Pioneers Park Nature Center:
The afternoon’s presentation and tour will highlight the history of Nature Center grounds and facilities, their habitat and land management, including their garden and trail areas, and the Prairie Corridor.

Pioneers Park Nature Center encompasses 668 acres of tallgrass prairie, woodlands, wetlands and a tributary stream of Salt Creek. Since 1963 the Nature Center has served the Lincoln area as an environmental education center and wildlife sanctuary. More than ten miles of hiking trails wind through various habitats, gardens, historic buildings, and a small herd of bison. The Prairie Building was the first building in Lincoln to be Leed Certified and features a green roof and rainwater harvesting infrastructure. September is a perfect time to visit the prairie.

7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Registration – Meet at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, located at 1222 S. 27^th Street, Lincoln

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Lincoln Children’s Zoo
Two separate tours with the same content will be given at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. When registering you will select either the 8:00 or 9:00 tour. If you do the 8:00 a.m. tour, you will have an opportunity to explore the zoo from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on your own.

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Next, we will walk over to the Hamann Rose Garden. Three separate tours will be given concurrently of the City of Lincoln Public Gardens - all three tours will visit the Sunken Gardens, Rotary Strolling Garden, Hamann Rose Garden and Cascade Fountain. You will also have time for a self-guided tour if you wish.

12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch on your own and transition to Pioneers Park Nature Center.

1:30 p.m.
After lunch, we will gather at Pioneers Park Nature Center Auditorium west of Lincoln at 3201 South Coddington, Lincoln.

1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
At this site, we will divide into two groups and concurrently have a lecture in the auditorium and a tour of the Nature Center grounds.

3:30 p.m.
The NNLA Field Day officially ends but the Nature Center is open until 4:30 to continue with a self-guided tour.

Parking
For the morning sessions we will access the Lincoln Children's Zoo parking lot or area street parking. For the afternoon session, parking is available at the Nature Center.

NCNLP CE Hours: 5.0 hours will be awarded for attending this event.

Member Registration - $65
Non-Member Registration - $80
Student Registration - $15

Includes logo on all event materials. Must purchase registration fee separately if attending.
Silver - $250
Includes logo on all event materials plus one event registration.
Gold - $500
Includes logo on all event materials plus two event registrations.

Cancellation Policy: A refund, less a $10 administrative fee, will be given for all written requests time stamped/postmarked by September 12, 2024. Requests received after that date will be reviewed by the NNLA Board of Directors. In the unlikely event the NNLA Field Day is cancelled due to uncontrollable circumstances, your payment will be considered a donation to NNLA.

NNLA is not liable for any injury or damage resulting from willful acts of attendees. Attendees assume all risk and danger relating to the Field Day event, whether occurring prior to, during or after the event.
